TomSawyerseemstobetheprecursorofandthetemplateformisfitkidssuchasDennistheMenace,MalcolmintheMiddle,andCalvinandHobbs.WhatmakesthisstorygreatisthatTomSawyerrepresentseverythingthatisgreataboutchildhood.ThebookisfilledwithTom‘sadventuresplayingpiratesandwarwithhisfriendJoeHarper.Tomhasatrustedfriend,HuckFinn,whofewoftheadultsapproveof.Thebookisfilledwithideasofhowtheworldworks,suchashowpiratesandrobberswork,thataresoinnocent,theycouldonlycomefromachild.Itisastoryfilledwithaction,adventure,ingeniousideas,love,andschoolyardpolitics.Thewholestoryisseeminglyacomplicationofwhatpeopledidorwishtheydidduringtheirchildhood.

Thebookisalittledifficulttoreadatfirst.Personally,ittakesmealittlewhiletogetusedtothe19thcenturydialectinthebook.OtherthanreferringtopersonsofAfricandecentinderogatoryterms(whichI‘msureusestermsevenyoungchildrenalreadyknow),thebookwouldbeanenjoyablereadforpeopleofallages.Ihighlyrecommendthisbookforanyonelookingtofeelyoungagain,ifjustforafewhundredpages.
